Buying maternity wear can be a challenge for even the most stylish mamas-to-be, with much more to think about than simply making room for two (or three, or four!). Trying to keep up with nine months of changes to your body, while keeping your personal style, can feel almost as difficult as tying laces in your third trimester! But just as Mothercare understands the value of slip-on-shoes when you can’t see beyond your bump, we also understand the difficulty of balancing your sense of self with all-important comfort when it comes to dressing during pregnancy. From your first maternity evening dress to your wear-everywhere maternity jeans, we’ve got you – and bump – covered! It’s just one of our ways to welcome you to the club.

The Mothercare Dress My Bump competition was all about lending a helping hand to two expectant mums struggling to find their maternity style, and working with Hannah Fleming of HiBabyBlog.com and Helen Canning of CocoMamaStyle.com, we asked stuck in a style rut soon-to-be mums to get in touch and tell us their maternity wardrobe woes. The lucky winners, Natalie and Liz, were treated to a Mothercare maternity wear makeover by our ‘been there, done that and got the super stretchy t-shirt’ mummy fashionistas.

“I couldn’t believe it when I got the email to say I’d won the competition, I never win anything and this prize was extra special to me being as it was a pregnancy related competition and this is my first baby.” Liz

We also treated our model mummies-to-be to a glamorous photoshoot with professional photographer Meghan Lorna – who also arrived bump first to the London studio! Between swapping tips on the best maternity sleep pillows and bonding over elbows poking out of stomachs, Natalie and Liz were given the A-list treatment by hair stylist Tim Curry and makeup artist Sophie Whimster, who banished any traces of pre-baby sleepless nights and enhanced their gorgeous pregnancy glows. Meanwhile, our stylists, Hannah and Helen, had the run of the Mothercare maternity wardrobe, with rails full of everything from our most beautiful dresses and versatile tops and jeans, to those essential maternity bras, nursing bras and bump support belts.

The result was three maternity looks each for Natalie and Liz, that combined both style and comfort to dress their bumps beautifully.

“I now have some really useful, and stylish, clothes to wear which will last me for the rest of the pregnancy and once the baby is here, too.” Natalie

Natalie Look #1

Hannah at HiBabyBlog.com, a creative first-time mum and fantastic writer from Belfast, styled Natalie in a cool, comfortable and casual first outfit of classic blue skinny maternity jeans and a white maternity top with nursing vest, both by Mothercare’s own brand Blooming Marvellous. The look was finished with a graphic maternity cardigan by Noppies at Mothercare – the perfect throw-on cover-up for cooler months.

Natalie Look #2

For Natalie’s second look, Hannah styled her in a pair of super skinny (but with plenty of bump-space!) dark blue maternity jeans by Forever Fit at Mothercare, and a red striped jersey nursing top by Blooming Marvellous.

“My favourite pieces are the cream layered top and the red stripy top which I will be able to use for feeding post birth as well. The fabric is really soft and the tops have discreet vests built in, which is really handy.” Natalie

Natalie Look #3

And for making the most of those pre-baby evenings out, Hannah ensured Natalie looked gorgeously glam but still felt comfortable in a Blooming Marvellous caped maternity evening dress.

For Liz’s first look, Helen at CocoMamaStyle.com, an experienced fashion stylist and mum to two young girls, chose a cropped knitted maternity cardigan by Supermom at Mothercare, to really show off that lovely bump. Red skinny maternity jeans by Blooming Marvellous finished this stand-out look.

A floral maternity party dress by Ripe, available at Mothercare, was Helen’s choice for a flattering and colourful outfit ideal for evenings out.

“I also absolutely love the dress in Look 2. If I had seen it in the shop I don’t think I would’ve tried it on, but when I put it on I fell in love with it. It fitted perfectly and I was so proud to show off my bump in the dress.” Liz

Liz’s third look was easy-going but still on-trend, as Helen styled her in a fringed wrap maternity cardigan. paired with blue, lightly distressed maternity jeans. The perfect casual look for a bump-about-town!

“My favourite pieces of the day were the grey cardigan in Look 3 with the distressed denim jeans, I don’t think I’ve taken the grey cardigan off since the shoot! The jeans are so soft and comfortable and fit over my bump really well.” Liz

“I love my long knitted cardigan, as it's so handy to be able to layer outfits when you are pregnant, especially in the winter. I've also got loads of use out of my maternity skinny fit jeans as they can be dressed up for going out or dressed down for casual wear!” Natalie

“I had given Helen an insight into what my style is, and the clothes she picked out for me were perfect. There was a lovely mix of casual looks and a gorgeous glamourous look which is what I love.” Liz

A confidence-boosting collaboration between Mothercare, our two stylish mums Hannah and Helen, and gorgeous mum-to-be models Natalie and Liz, Mothercare’s Dress My Bump fashion photoshoot was a fun day full of fabulous maternity style – and the perfect way to say to two special expectant mothers, welcome to the club!
